Be still my Corgi-obsessed heart. The much-anticipated biannual event, Corgi Con, is officially set to go down on June 17 from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. at San Francisco’s Ocean Beach. The previous fall event welcomed 730 Corgis to frolic in the sands and sparkling waters of the Pacific Ocean, so it’s safe to say that this Summer edition will be graced with even more stubby-legged angels.
Start the Corgi Con festivities at the merchandise tent where you’ll find everything from “California” bumper stickers and sweatshirts to tote bags and beach towels. Proceeds will benefit Queen’s Best Stumpy Dog Rescue and Corgi Aid, Inc. At 11:30, there will be an attempt to capture as much Corgi-craze cuteness as possible in one fabulous group photo. Shortly thereafter the corgis suit up for the costume contest aka the most Instagram able event of the year. Think: Corgi hot dogs, Corgi cows, Corgi Pikach us… the possibilities are endless. During the last event, Ralphie won first place for his Star Wars BB-8 costume.
Once the Corgis strut their stuff for the cameras, they’re off to the famous Corgi Races! These fast and furious FRAP-ers(Frequent Random Acts of Play, more scientifically known as Frenetic Random Activity Periods according to the Corgi community), compete in multiple heats. The top two from each heat will advance to the finals. Mickey, the Usain Bolt of the Corgi world, has been the reigning champ for the past four years, crushing the competition every SF Corgi Con race thus far.
We had the exciting opportunity to chat with San Francisco-based Chompers the Corgi, and his owner, Katie on fame, frapping, and this furrtastic upcoming event. With over 105k followers on Instagram alone, this love able pup is ready to storm the beach and meet his fans.
Bayarea.com: How excited is Chompers (and you!) to be attending the event? Anything you’re both looking forward to in particular?
Chompers and Katie: We always look forward to attending Corgi Con every summer and can’t wait for the upcoming one in June! The organizers do a wonderful job organizing the events and each year it gets better. The best part of Corgi Con for us is seeing old friends and also making new ones, and of course giving Chompers the chance to spend a beautiful day at Ocean Beach with friends, which we don’t get to do often enough.
